Changing Your Address with HMRC
Keep your tax, benefits, and state pension records correct. Update through your Personal Tax Account.
Overview
HMRC holds your address for income tax, National Insurance, tax credits, benefits, and your state pension record. Updating it keeps correspondence reaching you and prevents missed deadlines on anything tax-related. The simplest route is your online Personal Tax Account, which updates most HMRC services at once.
How to update
- Sign in to your Personal Tax Account at gov.uk using your Government Gateway ID
- Update your address under your personal details — this updates most HMRC services together
- Check that tax credits and Child Benefit are updated if you claim them — some require a separate notification
- If you're self-employed, confirm your Self Assessment record reflects the new address
When to do it
Update once your move is confirmed. There's no waiting period — the change takes effect on your record immediately, though postal correspondence may take a cycle to catch up.
If you forget
Missed tax correspondence can lead to penalties and interest you didn't know were accruing. Benefit and tax-credit payments can be disrupted if the address on file is wrong.
