01Final Address Updates
These are the records where an incorrect address has real financial, legal, or healthcare consequences.
HMRC and DVLA updated · Electoral roll registration submitted · Bank and credit card addresses confirmed · GP re-registered at new address · Any remaining digital audit items closed
02Financial Cleanup
Settling financial loose ends now prevents forgotten charges and disputes emerging months later.
Deposit return timeline confirmed with landlord · Standing orders and direct debits updated · Old utility accounts closed and final bills settled · Any overpayments or refunds chased
03Local Setup
Registering for local services before you need them urgently is one of the highest-leverage tasks of the first two weeks.
Council tax account set up at new address · NHS GP and dentist registered locally · Local transport registered or card loaded · Parking permit or resident scheme applied for if needed
04Life Normalisation
Settling fully takes 6–8 weeks. This phase is about building rhythms, not completing a list.
Regular route to work or key amenities established · At least one local connection made · One room personalised or fully arranged · Any remaining outstanding items noted for next weekend
Settling reminders
- ·
HMRC and DVLA must both be updated separately — they do not share address data. Driving with an out-of-date DVLA address is a criminal offence with a fine of up to £1,000.
- ·
Electoral roll registration takes up to 12 working days to process. Updating it also has a positive effect on your credit score — worth doing in the first week.
- ·
Chase your deposit return in writing, not verbally — email creates a timestamped record. Landlords must return deposits within 10 days of agreement.
- ·
Research shows it takes 6–8 weeks to feel genuinely settled. Give yourself that window before making any big judgements about the move.
The Highest-Risk Tasks
HMRC and DVLA are the two records most people forget — both have serious consequences. Missed tax correspondence leads to penalties, and driving with an out-of-date DVLA address is a criminal offence. Do these first. They each take fewer than five minutes.
Deposit Return
Start the deposit return conversation in writing, within the first week of leaving. Landlords must return deposits within 10 days of agreement. Document everything — the condition photos you took on arrival are your strongest protection if there is a dispute.
